Of goals submitted in your 2024 Business Advisory Council Plan, on a scale of 1-10 being goal accomplished. What goals were you able to accomplish? What challenges have your experience implementing your goals?
Educator Business Tours – 10. Offered and implemented two teacher tours for:
Ross and Pickaway County teachers – May 31, 2024
Teays Valley School District teachers – July 31 and August 1, 2024
Reverse Business Tours – 8. Offered and implemented one reverse business tour as part of the Logan Elm’s Education Walk event. The challenge is coordinating these events with the school district’s busy schedules.
Job Shadows/Internships – 6. We have completed over 50 one-day job shadow engagements but have not placed an intern yet. The challenge for work-based learning and internships is the school staff to track hours and monitor student performance at the business site. Currently, there is a lack of staff to do this tracking.
Guest Speaker Events – 10. Guest speakers are in each school district each month.
High School Boot Camps – 10. We did bootcamps at 3 different school districts. The bootcamps included mock interviews where outside Human Resource personnel came in to interview students and evaluate their resumes. These events are mandatory for all juniors and seniors.
Pickaway County College & Career Night – 10. Held on October 1, 2024. 61 colleges, 24 employers and students from the four Pickaway County school districts.
ACT Prep Workshops – 10. Held three workshops at three school districts.
Pickaway HELPS/Ula Jean Metzler Scholarship – 10. 3 scholarships were awarded in May 2024 to 3 current high school graduates. 2 scholarships were renewed from past year recipients.
College Visits – 10. Visits to Columbus State University, Ohio State University, Ohio University and Hocking College took place in 2024.
Manufacturing Day – 10. A manufacturing day was offered and implemented for 3 school districts with visits to manufacturers close to their schools.
Skilled Trades Fair – 10. The next one will take place on March 6, 2025. 43 skilled trade organizations are signed up to appear at the Pickaway County Fairgrounds. Students from 3 school districts and 1 Technical School will attend. Attendance at LAST year’s event was over 500 students.
Health Science Careers Camp – 10. We did a Healthcare Bootcamp with OhioHealth on June 10 and 11, 2024. Our BAC was the FIRST to have a Boot Camp with OhioHealth. This spring we also plan on putting on a Logistics Boot Camp in partnership with Norfolk Southern Railway.
Business Advisory Council – 10. Each year our BAC puts together a Pickaway County State of the Region presentation and presents it to each school district and during in-class events. This presentation includes existing and prospective employers and careers coming into our county.
Pickaway HR Professionals Group – 10. This group meets twice a year to evaluate hiring trends and what skills area businesses are looking for in high school graduates. Area school counselors also attend these events so they can understand local needs and network with local businesses.
Student Ambassadors Group – 0. This program is being re-evaluated. We want to make sure Ambassadors are really focused and engaged on learning more about careers. The challenge is to promote Ambassadorships in the schools when Pickaway WORKS is not there each day. We need to be more engaged with the students earlier in their high school careers. This is a challenge our BAC needs to figure out.
Real Money Real World – 10. This program is run in partnership with the Ohio State Extension office. It was offered to 8th grade students in 3 school districts. It involved 3 days of classroom instruction and 1 day of a simulation where local community members assist in running the simulation.
